Southwest Light Rail Electrical Construction by Egan Company

A commercial contractor with a wide range of capabilities in systems integration, mechanical, and construction works, Egan Company is also involved in electrical projects. The Southwest Light Rail construction is one of the projects where Egan Company provides electrical construction servicing.

Project Details

Covering 14.5 miles of railworks, the Southwest Light Rail, otherwise known as the Metro Green Line Extension, connects Minneapolis with Eden Prairie. The transport system is one of Minnesota’s large public works projects aiming to serve downtown Minneapolis with a 21st-century transitway.

With a commitment to deliver and maintain safety for the riding public, Egan Company is responsible for the following electrical works.

  • Grounding and scraping

Part of the construction work is on the electrical groundwork necessary for the wire assembly. Some of the work done on-site is clearing the track surface. The scraping is to place the wires and parts of the tracks for the electric train.

  • Signal wires installation

Another aspect of the project is installing the signal wires and lighting for the rail transport system.

  • Electrical protection

To protect against stray voltage, the wiring on the ground has a concrete-encased conduit system. The concrete casing helps to protect the electrical installation from any external damages.

  • Electrical construction

As the power source for the railway system, electrical construction is a vital part of the project. From voltage distribution to installation, every necessary electrical system set-up is in the works.

  • Infrastructure construction

Each part of the light rail track will have an electrical infrastructure in place. On-site, every location along the route already has some construction going on. Egan Company’s approach to the Southwest Light Rail project consists of doing simultaneous work on different sites within the rail route.

Metro Green Line Extension Project Timeline

The Metro Green Line extension or Southwest Light Rail construction project already started in November 2018.

Along with Egan Company’s electrical construction, the railway system is already in progress, from Eden Prairie to Minneapolis. There are already tunnels, bridges, and stations that construction crews are busy building.

By 2023, the 21st-century electric train transportation system will be open to the public and connect the communities along the transit routes.

Southwest Light Rail Electrical Construction

With Egan Company as the electrical contractor for the project, electricians are busy installing the electrical groundwork and infrastructure construction.

A total of 16 stations are under construction and will traverse the following locations:

  1. Minneapolis
  2. St. Louis Park
  3. nearby Edina
  4. Hopkins
  5. Minnetonka
  6. Eden Prairie

Each of the stations located along the areas will need an electrical installation, covering signal controls, light fixtures, and traffic lights. Egan Company is proudly responsible for the electrical service requirements of the Southwest Light Rail construction project.

Minneapolis Light Rail Construction

The Southwest Light Rail construction is a project by the Minnesota government and the Metropolitan Council. Building the modern rail transport system costs $2 billion, of which $928.8 million came from the Full Funding Grant Agreement from the Federal Transit Administration.

Aside from connecting the cities and areas, the Minneapolis light rail construction is also an integrated railway system. The Southwest Light Rail project will have connections to the Northstar Commuter Rail, METRO Blue line, and bus routes along the way.

Electrical Infrastructure Contractor

Egan Company already has experience in building electrical systems for a light rail transit system. One of the company’s previous projects is the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit connecting downtown Minneapolis to St. Paul.

The track record of Egan Company in providing exemplary service made them a preferred electrical infrastructure contractor for the rail project. With their highly trained electricians, the Southwest Light Rail is already the third railway project of Egan Company.
